Designed and built as a specialist mental hospital in 1965, the hospital was named after Dr. John Connolly (1794-1866) an early pioneer in psychiatric medicine.

Built as a modern 90 bedded unit, it also had out-patient and day patients departments.

It was closed and demolished in 1996.
